In 2004, volunteer football coach Bill Courtney took on a daunting job at Manassas High, an inner-city Memphis school where the players were more likely to wind up in jail than in college. The Manassas Tigers were bereft of victories, funds, and morale. Courtney recruited a group of freshmen to turn things around, and in their first season, they got creamed. But with each passing year, they won more games and more respect. In 2009, Courtney set a bold goal: to win the first playoff game in the school's 110-year history. With remarkable finesse, directors Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin tell a story that is so much more than just a "sports" movie—it resonated deeply with audiences at Aspen Filmfest 2011. Thoroughly engaging and intelligently inspiring, Undefeated celebrates the power of love, leadership, and belief in an unlikely transformation. Director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody—the team behind Juno—again pair up for this smart, unflinchingly yet funny take on our tendency to romanticize the past. Charlize Theron plays the caustic, self-absorbed Mavis, a writer struggling to finish a series of young-adult novels. A baby announcement from an old high-school flame (Patrick Wilson) prompts Mavis to impulsively return to her small Minnesota hometown in the hopes of rekindling a relationship with her former—and now happily married—beau. When going home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis strikes up a wary friendship with another former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn't quite gotten over high school either. Crackling with screenwriter Cody's signature sharp dialogue and anchored by Theron, who plays Mavis's every flaw to pitiful perfection, Reitman's latest reveals that home is not always where the heart is. (USA, 94 min., R, Print Courtesy of Paramount Pictures)
