NOON Wheeler Opera House The World Before Her Conversation with film guest follows
Also plays Isis Theatre, Friday, Oct 5, 6:30 PM
Every year 20 contestants convene in Bombay for the Miss India competition. More than a beauty pageant, it offers entry into one of the few career options for young women. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Durga Vahini, a training camp for the women’s wing of the Hindu fundamentalist movement. In her award-winning documentary, Nisha Pahuja gained unprecedented access to these two very different worlds to craft this lively, provocative account of the choices and contradictions facing young Indians today. Drawing surprising parallels between the way these women are perceived and the opportunities afforded them at both extremes, the film provides a riveting portrait of the tension between traditional and modern viewpoints in a country in critical transition. (Canada, 2012, 89 min.)

Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) stars as Justine, a Parisian twentysomething struggling with commitment issues in this charming drama that tackles thorny father-daughter relationships with humor and pathos. After a trail of boyfriends, Justine thinks she has found her soul mate. But her temporary happiness is thrown when her neurotic 60-year-old father (a wonderful Michel Blanc) suffers a delayed midlife crisis and announces that his young second wife is pregnant. Justine and her half-sister, Dom, who is trying to adopt, are indignant. And it doesn't help that Papa befriends Justine's ex-boyfriends. Will they make peace before it's too late? Leavened by a lively soundtrack and engaging performances, Jennifer Devoldère's second feature explores the complications of the family heart. (France, 2011, 94 min.)

5:30 PM Wheeler Opera House Shadow Dancer
In his new narrative feature, director James Marsh (Project Nim, Man on Wire) has crafted an absorbing psychological thriller about shifting convictions and entangled loyalties during the last days of the Irish Troubles. Growing up in 1970s Belfast, Collette McVeigh (Andrea Riseborough in an extraordinary performance) finds her childhood shattered by a family tragedy. Twenty years later, Collette, now active in the IRA, is arrested by MI5 officer Mac (Clive Owen) after a failed bomb attempt. Coerced into becoming a mole for British intelligence, she returns home, launching a deadly game of cat and mouse. Filled with unnerving twists, this slow-burning thriller creates a world where paramilitary operations are inseparable from blood ties and affection can easily curdle into suspicion. (UK/Ireland/ France, 2012, 101 min.)

8:15 PM Wheeler Opera House G-Dog Conversation and book signing with Father Greg Boyle follows Special thanks to Adam + Melony Lewis
Just when you think real heroes are scarce, a genuine one emerges: the inexhaustible Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest also known as G-Dog. He's the charismatic visionary behind Los Angeles-based Homeboy Industries, the country’s largest, most successful gang intervention and rehab program. Directed by Academy Award-winning documentarian Freida Mock (Maya Lin: A Strong Vision), the film depicts Boyle's unstoppable compassion, which has helped transform thousands of lives and caught the attention of politicians. But when the donations and support aren't coming in fast enough, Homeboy is at risk of closing its doors. Entertaining, moving, and, of course, inspiring, G-Dog shows how one extraordinary person undaunted by extraordinary circumstances can change the world, or at least his hood. (USA, 2012, 92 min.)
