NOON Wheeler Opera House Shun Li and the Poet
Many films have chronicled the consequences of the recent wave of immigration to Europe, but few with the lyrical delicacy and insight of documentarian Andre Segre’s award-winning narrative debut. Shun Li is brought to Italy by a "broker," whom she slowly pays off while saving money to bring her son from China. When she is sent from her factory job to a bar in the Venetian lagoon, she strikes up a friendship with Bepi, a fisherman nicknamed "the Poet" who immigrated years earlier from Eastern Europe. The two share a special understanding, which ultimately transforms them both. Segre draws us into this "immigrant world" by quietly revealing the ways in which displaced people create their own support systems. (Italy, 2011, 92 min.)

During World War II, Albanian Muslims, armed only with their traditional honor code, faced down Nazi occupiers to save the lives of nearly 2,000 Jews. Now, two men on overlapping quests helped bring this little-known and profoundly poignant story of unexpected heroism to light: Norman H. Gershman (formerly of Basalt), a renowned Jewish-American photographer determined to record the Albanians' bravery and compassion, and Rexhep Hoxha, a Muslim-Albanian seeking to return an heirloom to the Jewish family his father sheltered 60 years earlier. Shot in Albania, Bulgaria, Israel, the United Kingdom, and the U.S., this emotionally powerful documentary features in-depth interviews with survivors and rescuers, archival footage, an exquisite series of animations, and an original score by Philip Glass. (USA, 2012, 86 min.)

Amidst the heartache and trauma of post-genocide Rwanda, a committed group of young cyclists began importing racing bikes into the country with the hopes of resurrecting the sport and forming a national team. When legendary bike builder Tom Ritchey met these cyclists in 2005, he recognized their potential and left with a question: What if they could make it to the Olympics? Narrated by Forest Whitaker, Rising from Ashes documents the extraordinary beginning of Team Rwanda, as former American cycling pro Jock Boyer helps the riders not only learn training techniques but also achieve basic measures of health, nourishment, and living conditions. This inspiring story of redemption, hope, and second chances celebrates much more than just the bike. (USA, 2012, 82 min.)

6:00 PM Isis Theatre A Late Quartet
Yaron Zilberman's debut fiction feature assembles a powerhouse cast - Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Mark Ivanir - for a dramatically charged tale set in the world of classical music. Seemingly a cause for celebration, the 25th anniversary of an illustrious string quartet instead precipitates a tempestuous (and potentially explosive) release of repressed feelings, long-held resentments, and painful betrayals. As the ensemble's aging patriarch, Walken has never been better, brilliantly etching his character's indecision and, finally, clear-eyed resolve - even as the four-cornered universe he so lovingly created begins to fly apart. Zilberman gracefully guides us through the painful inevitabilities of aging and change that contrast with the timeless beauty of music. (USA, 2012, 105 min.)

Life imitates art and art imitates life in this riveting new feature from director-star Ben Affleck (The Town). Based on true events, this thriller chronicles the life-or-death covert operation that unfolded during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis - a plan unknown to the public for decades. When Iranian militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, six Americans managed to slip away and find refuge in the Canadian ambassador’s home. Knowing it is only a matter of time before they are discovered, a CIA "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez (Affleck), comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country - one so incredible it could only happen in the movies. Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman also star. (USA, 2012, 120 min., Rated R)

Fifty-year-old Michel is a man of principle unexpectedly faced with early retirement. It's an adjustment, but a modest union pension, happy marriage, and plenty of grandkids occupy his time. Then, one evening, he and his wife are robbed, and when Michel learns the perpetrator's identity, his complacency is shaken. Inspired by a Victor Hugo poem, this gentle tale explores the ethical and emotional adjustments of middle age, as Michel tries to reconcile his sense of social justice with the rage he feels towards his assailant. Set in a sparkling Marseilles with marvelous performances by Jean-Pierre Daroussin and Ariane Ascardie, this richly felt parable for our times explores life's fundamental question: How do we choose to live it? (France, 2011, 107 min.)
