This beautifully acted gem of a film is from, and about, the heart. Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and Anna (Felicity Jones) meet at college in Los Angeles and fall madly in love. When Anna returns to her native England, the couple is abruptly thrust into a long-distance relationship that tests their perfect romance. Director and co-writer Drake Doremus masterfully evokes the complexity and messiness of Jacob and Anna's love affair as their intense bond stretches over time and distance, continually changing course. Yelchin, who received Aspen Filmfest's Artist to Watch Award this fall, and Jones (The Tempest) are enthralling in their sweetness and honesty, and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) and Charlie Bewley (Eclipse) make memorable appearances as other love interests. Original, thoughtful, and remarkably spot on, Like Crazy strikes a universal chord while exploring the bittersweet beauty and impermanence of relationships. (USA, 89 min., PG-13, Print courtesy of Paramount Pictures)

Adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer's acclaimed novel of the same name, this highly anticipated film traces the story of a young boy's journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery. Eleven-year-old Oskar (newcomer Thomas Horn), precocious and intelligent, is convinced that his father (Tom Hanks), who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, left behind a secret message. Feeling disconnected from his grieving mother (Sandra Bullock) and driven by a relentlessly active mind that refuses to believe in things that can't be observed, Oskar urgently searches all of New York City for the lock that fits a mysterious key he found in his father's closet. Directed by Stephen Daldry (The Reader, The Hours), the film's stellar cast also includes John Goodman, James Gandolfini, Viola Davis, and Max von Sydow. (U.S., 128 min., PG-13, Print courtesy of Warner Bros.)
