For his directorial debut, Ralph Fiennes transports Shakespeare's tragic tale of war, politics, and revenge to the present. Rome is under siege by an army led by Aufidius (Gerard Butler), and the starving citizens riot. Coriolanus (Fiennes), a courageous yet haughty general, restores order, but his harsh discipline suppresses civil rights. As his military successes propel him toward an important election, Coriolanus refuses to court the favor of the Roman people. Outmaneuvered by politicians and even his own mother (Vanessa Redgrave), he is ultimately banished. Set on retribution, the outraged Coriolanus turns to his nemesis Aufidius for help and marches to his fate. With the assistance of a talented team, including Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain, and cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (The Hurt Locker), Fiennes infuses this historical drama, filmed in present-day Belgrade, with raw emotional intensity. Seventeen-year-old Alike (Adepero Oduye) exists in two worlds. In one, she lives harmoniously in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood with her middle-class, conservative parents and younger sister. She's obedient and traditionally feminine, and a straight-A student. The other side of Alike's life is spent with her out-of-the-closet best friend, Laura, dancing in gay clubs, embracing her nascent identity as a lesbian, and seeking her first serious girlfriend. Though it's inevitable these worlds will collide, Pariah is about much more than deciding whether to come out. Creating a spectacular sense of atmosphere and authenticity, first-time director Dee Rees takes us deep and strong into the world of an intelligent teenager trying to find her way into her own. Bradford Young received the Sundance Excellence in Cinematography award for the unique look he gave the film. (US, 86 min., R, Print courtesy of Focus Features)
